!*FIRST_NAME*!
Here
is the first 2005 edition of HRD Alert! to which you subscribed.
Major articles are now linked to our Human Resources Development
Centre or Desert Wave Enterprises site. You can click on the link
while online and print an article or read it on screen.
EDITORIAL
Welcome
to another issue of HRD Alert! This has been a long time coming
as I took some time off during late February - March. I'll make
every effort to produce a monthly copy on the first Monday of
every month. It's amazing that the first three months of 2005
have already been and gone. In Central Australia it's getting
cooler reminding us that in the Southern Hemisphere Winter is
coming.
At
present I'm working on a complete upgrade of the Desert Wave Enterprises
site (this is a major overhaul ... well overdue) which I expect
to roll out mid-April. The HRD Centre also needs ongoing improvement
and fine tuning. Managing your own sites, as some of you know,
is a time-consuming task.
Some
of the work I do is writing proposals for clients. Under the Australian
/ United States Free Trade Agreement, US firms can now tender
for Australian Government jobs. This provides the potential for
me to advise inexperienced US firms about dealing with Australian
Government departments and agencies. I'm hoping to crank up some
business in this area in the next few months.
In
this issue you'll find links to my article about on-the-job training
and training ways. I'm using a different approach. Rather than
sending you a five or six page email with all the detail included,
I'm now providing a synopsis to my articles with a link to my
Human Resources Development Centre site where you can read the
full article. You can also print it if you wish. This provides
you with a shorter e-newsletter and you only need to look at those
topics of interest to you.
The
benefit to me is that the Site Build It! site is highly focused
on search engines which bring traffic to my sites. (Traffic =
Sales). So I'm getting the best of both worlds from my writing
efforts.
Important!
In a few days I will send you an email
asking you to subscribe to HRD Alert! e-newsletter. 'That's strange',
you'd think, aren't I already subscribed? Yes, you are, but I'm
moving management of my HRD Alert! email list to Sitesell which
runs a highly automated process that will make my life easier.
It will also provide much more thorough data on how many people
subscribe/unsubscribe, read the newsletter and much more.
When
you receive the email from Site Sell, which is provided with my
Site Build It! site, you will be asked to confirm your subscription.
This is called double-opt-in and reduces the opportunity of someone
subscribing you to mine, or any other newsletter without your
knowledge and permission.
I
do hope you choose to resubscribe. There will be a small bribe
attached for you as an incentive (not that I think I need bribe
you, but it's a great opportunity to show my appreciation).
Look
for this email message in our inbox soon.
I trust you've had
a bumper year to date and that all is going well for you.
Until next issue,
yours
in HRD

MAKING ON-JOB-TRAINING WORK
On-the-job
training is often seen as a way to ensure employees are trained
without huge expense or with minimal disruption to productivity.
Surprisingly, many organisations simply don't make any allowance
for training; OJT happens by default rather than design. This
laissez faire approach to OJT is a recipe for substandard
performance and differing standards of performance. New starters
simply stumble along asking colleagues how to do tasks and perhaps
reading procedures manuals or learning from trial and error.

TRAINING WAYS - LEARNING GUIDES
Learning
guides are a very useful medium for delivering flexible learning
when the topic and circumstances are conducive to it. According
to Bruhn and Guthrie (1994), a Learning Guide is a 'structured
booklet designed to direct the learner through a series of learning
activities and to a range of resources to achieve specified competencies
or learning outcomes".
