Well here we go again in the New Year 2003. Remember when
we were worrying about the Y2K bug which never happened?
I have a gut feeling that this year will be very eventful
for all of us ... perhaps one of the most eventful years
of the past decade.

Whatever this year brings, it's an appropriate time for us
to give some thought to what WE want; to set our business
and personal goals. The first article helps you there.

Not really in the HR&D area, but probably an issue for all
of us is the amount of spam we receive. There is also an
article telling you how you can rid yourself of that plague.
Well, perhaps not forever, but at least reduce the volume.

Finally, if you are into affiliate programs, look at the
Webstars 2000 info in Worth a Look. And it is, it's selling
very well and promises to make some of us big money for at
least a short while.

Did you, like millions of others, (including me) make New
Year's Resolutions? What chances do you think you will
have of achieving them? Probably none if you don't set
goals and manage them through to fruition.

Here are some tips about goal setting that will help you
succeed

Goals must be SMART - Specific, Measurable, Achievable,
Realistic and Time-bound. Make sure you know exactly what
you want to achieve. If you don't know where you're going,
how will you get there?

Write Them Down - write your resolutions and your plan of
action. Make copies and place them in as many visible places
as possible, to ensure you constantly remind your
subconscious. You might like to amend the wording later on
if your goals change. The amazing benefit of writing your
goals is that you'll see how fast you accomplish them!

It's an excellent motivator when you see each goal being
achieved and you can tick it off the list.

Use Positive Words - rather than say "I will lose 10 kilos"
or "I will not waste time", make it more positive and focus
on the end result. Say "Before 28 February, I will reach my
target weight of 62 kilos" or "I will spend at least one
hour each day having fun and exploring different ways of
relaxing with my family".

Make it Fun - to encourage yourself to do what you really
want to do, rather than force yourself to do something you
dislike. Discover a new sport, re-discover an activity you
used to love doing but stopped because sometimes life gets
in the way ....

One Step At A Time - don't attempt to change your life
overnight. It is far better to attempt a few goals at a time
- you can always add more later. Success is self fulfilling
and becomes habit forming.

Make a Plan - once you know "what" you want to change, write
down "how" you intend to change it. Break it down into an
action guide that you can follow. Identify areas where you
may get more information eg, if you are giving up smoking,
obtain information from the many publications available.

Persevere - remember why you started in the first place.
Winners never quit and quitters never win!

Reward Yourself - map out milestones towards achieving your
goals and reward yourself, even for small successes. Success
is often elusive, to keep out the pretenders. Plan your
work, work your plan, embrace change, achieve, enjoy and
celebrate your victories.

Good Luck with your goals in 2003!

In one or two past editions I have commented on the scourge
of unwanted email. I answer my email twice daily, in the
morning and in the late afternoon and any other time I
happen to be online and something arrives.

For years now I have been innundated with spam which is a
time waster of huge proportions. The amount of spam I get
from pornographers is astonishing. I often wonder whether
I'm the only one not involved. I also receive eight
or nine requests for 'urgent business assistance' which
invariably lead one to the Nigerian money scam wherein
senders want me to launder millions of dollars and take a
big cut (they obviously haven't heard of our Federal agency
AUSTRAC which monitors monetary transactions); then there
are the offers of viagra, breast reductions or enlargements,
mortgages, and a host of MLM offers to make me wealthy by
lunchtime.

I have a policy wherein I NEVER, EVER respond to spam. If
all of us do that, senders will eventually realise that it
is a waste of time and effort and give it away. My first
line of defence was to delete it unopened, but
unfortunately, deleting it doesn't stop the next mail out
arriving. Unfortunately, many of the remove links don't work
either by design or just bad programming.

Now I think I have found a solution.

On the CD with the most recent edition of Internet.au was a
free program called MailWasher Version 1.3. When you start
up your computer, you run MailWasher before loading your
email client. MailWasher loads the message headers so you
can see who has sent you email. At the left end of the rows
of email are two selection boxes. In relation to each email
you can either delete it or delete and bounce it. It's the
bounce option that appeals to me. It sends messages back to
the senders advising them that the recipient address (yours)
was invalid. And it adds it to a blacklist so that if any
further email comes from the addresses, it just deletes
them. Most spammers have automated software which
automatically deletes addresses which have failed to deliver
- it's a sure way to get off their lists.

Bingo! Within a couple of weeks I have been using it, my
spam rate has declined considerably. It's the best, safest
solution I've found since it eliminates the chances of your
deleting an email you want to receive. Sure, it takes a
minute or two, but it's much easier than the alternatives.

MailWasher has a site at http://www.mailwasher.net where you
can obtain a copy.

A COACHING MODEL

All of us at work are coaches to some extent. I found an
excellent item about POWER Coaching written by Eric Welburn
who is a corporate coach. It is a worthwhile model to have a
look at if you are involved with coaching at any level. It's
a fairly lengthy, but very contains some very good advice.

EXCELLENT SOURCE FOR STUDENTS

Professor Robin Williams at the Royal Melbourne Institute of
Technology has dozens of his keynote addresses online and
available for all. Many are in PowerPoint slide presentation
format.

There are various topics of interest just a click away. Go

lists of his presentations.

AD BROADCASTING - THE NEW WAY TO ADVERTISE ONLINE

For any of you who are interested in making money with
affiliate programs, visit my affiliate site and read all
about web-casting. Webcasting involves a new method of
online advertising whereby a popup appears on your desktop
advertising a specific item, event etc. You click for more
information or delete it. It has apparently been getting
spectacular results for those using it, but like any
unwanted intrusion, if there are too many broadcasts
arriving it will become a nuisance. Copy and paste the
following link into your url line to visit or click if the
url is intact.
